Wensleydale Railway, Heritage railway in North Yorkshire, England
Wensleydale Railway is a heritage railway in North Yorkshire that runs about 35 kilometres between Northallerton and Redmire. The line passes through rural terrain and offers views of rolling countryside with small villages along the route.
The railway began in 1846 as a line connecting Northallerton to Bedale and was later expanded by various operators to reach Garsdale. The Defence Ministry supported restoration work between Redmire and Northallerton to enable movement of military equipment to Catterick base.
The name Wensleydale comes from the valley of the River Ure, which runs through the landscape. Stations preserve old waiting rooms and original signage from the early 1900s, showing how travel worked in that era.
Trains run regularly between Leeming Bar and Redmire, with easy access via exit 51 on the A1 motorway. Most services operate on weekends and during school holidays.
The line still carries freight trains that transport goods and materials through the valley on scheduled runs. These working trains blend current logistics with the historic rail route.
