Wessex Ridgeway, Long distance footpath in South West England.
The Wessex Ridgeway is a long-distance walking route that stretches 137 kilometers from Marlborough in Wiltshire to Lyme Regis in Dorset, following chalk ridges and varied landscapes. The path stays high, offering views across open hills, woodlands, and small settlements that dot the journey.
The path is part of an ancient route system dating back to prehistoric times, linking hilltop settlements and sacred sites that were used over centuries. This high ground passage was essential for early peoples moving through the landscape.
Walkers encounter remains of ancient cultures along the route, including prehistoric stone circles and hillforts that shaped this landscape thousands of years ago. These places reveal how important high ground was to early communities and their way of life.
The complete route takes around two weeks to walk, with small villages along the way offering accommodation and supplies. Good footwear and weather-resistant clothing are important, as exposed high ground can bring changing conditions.
The Dorset section features green directional markers displaying the Wessex wyvern symbol, a dragon from regional heraldry. This distinctive marker helps walkers follow the route and links them to the medieval rulers of this land.
