The island was once farmland before a major transformation project began using soil from London construction sites. This project turned the area into a protected wildlife space and a buffer against coastal erosion.

The northern sea wall path is open at all times and offers the best views of the landscape. The main reserve can be visited in daylight, so plan your visit around sunrise and sunset times.
The project is run by a bird protection organization and uses building material from one of London's largest construction projects. This created a new landscape type that both protects wildlife and defends the coast from flooding.
