Willow Globe Theatre, Open-air theatre in Nantmel, Wales
The Willow Globe Theatre is an open-air theatre in Nantmel, Wales, with a unique structure made from living willow trees woven together to form walls and roof structures. The performance space seats around 150 spectators and hosts shows throughout the year.
The theatre was founded in 1992 and officially opened in 2007 under the direction of Susanna Best and Philip Bowen, who had previously worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company. The concept was created to honour the legacy of classical theatres while establishing a modern performance venue.
The theatre presents regular Shakespeare productions and community projects that bring together visitors and local performers. Performances happen in the open air and create a shared experience for everyone who gathers here.
The theatre is located between Llandrindod Wells and Rhayader near the A470 road and has parking available on site. Since it is an outdoor venue, visitors should bring weatherproof clothing and check seasonality of performances before planning a visit.
The structure is a replica of London's Globe Theatre, but with the special feature that it is built entirely from living willow trees that continue to grow and constantly reshape the space. This means the theatre literally takes on a different form each year.
