Wilton Castle, Gothic country house in Wilton, England
Wilton Castle is a country house in Wilton, England, displaying 15 bays across its north front with a central tower and diagonal buttresses framing the main entrance. The structure was adapted into residential apartments while preserving its listed architectural features.
The current building was constructed in 1810 by architect Sir Robert Smirke, replacing an earlier medieval fortress. The site had been home to the Bulmer family for centuries before this redesign.
The building is now divided into residential apartments and can be viewed from the outside, with its Grade II listed status protecting its architectural features. Interior access is limited since it functions as private residential space.
The outer walls retain sections of the original 1210 fortified structure, built under royal license from King John. These surviving remnants offer a physical connection to the medieval fortress that preceded the current building.
