Wimpole Home Farm, Demonstration farm in Cambridgeshire, England.
Wimpole Home Farm is a demonstration farm on the National Trust estate in Cambridgeshire with historical barns, sheds, and agricultural buildings scattered across the grounds. The Grade II and Grade II* listed structures show how a traditional working farm was organized and what the buildings looked like when in active use.
Sir John Soane designed and built this model farm in 1794 for Philip Yorke, the 3rd Earl of Hardwicke, to showcase new farming techniques of the era. The site represented progressive agricultural thinking and shows how wealthy landowners put innovative ideas into practice on their estates.
The farm maintains rare livestock breeds such as Shire horses, traditional pig varieties, sheep, and cattle that keep British farming traditions alive. These animals show visitors what farm life looked like in earlier times and how people worked with them daily.
Visitors can watch daily farm work, explore the historic buildings, and learn about sustainable farming practices throughout the year. Wear sturdy shoes since the paths and grounds across the working area can be uneven and muddy.
The Great Barn holds Grade II* listed status, placing it among structures of exceptional architectural importance in British heritage. This recognition reflects how the barn's design and construction quality stood out even among other period farm buildings.
