Woofferton transmitting station, Radio transmitting station in Woofferton, United Kingdom.
Woofferton transmitting station is a shortwave radio broadcasting facility located in the rural village of Woofferton in Shropshire, England. The site features several tall antenna masts that rise above the surrounding farmland and are visible from a distance.
The station was built in 1943 to support the BBC's overseas broadcasting during World War II. It was partly funded by the United States, making it one of the more unusual transatlantic broadcasting projects of that period.
The station holds the call sign M0WOF for its amateur radio club, which brings together local radio enthusiasts. The club gives members a chance to operate transmitting equipment in a working broadcast environment.
The site is an active working facility and is not open to casual visitors. Anyone wishing to visit should contact the operators in advance to request access.
Woofferton was for many years one of the most powerful shortwave transmitting sites in Europe. During the Cold War, it played a direct role in sending radio broadcasts into countries behind the Iron Curtain.
