Winn's Common

Winn's Common is a public park in Plumstead with expansive open grassland and multiple walking paths throughout the grounds. It features sports facilities, play areas, and a seasonal paddling pool for visitors of different ages.

This site contains a Bronze Age burial mound called Winn's Common Tumulus, indicating human settlement from ancient times. Roman artifacts discovered across the grounds show the area was used over many centuries by different peoples.

The name reflects its history as common land where local residents once had grazing rights and access to shared resources. Today it serves as a gathering place where neighbors meet for recreation and outdoor activities throughout the year.

The flat, open terrain makes it accessible for walks and various activities in any season. The seasonal paddling pool welcomes families and children during summer months when the weather is warm.

During World War II, barrage balloons were positioned here to defend against enemy aircraft and protect the nearby Royal Arsenal in Woolwich. This military purpose has disappeared, but the site retains memory of this significant defense role.
