White Roding Windmill, Grade II listed windmill in White Roding, England.
White Roding Windmill is a five-storey brick tower mill with an ogee cap and four sails driven by a cast iron shaft. The cylindrical structure tapers toward the top and displays the typical design of an English tower mill used for grain milling.
An original post mill from 1609 was destroyed by a severe storm, leading to the construction of the current brick tower mill in 1877. Later restoration work, including a new cap, helped preserve the structure for future generations.
The mill exemplifies how grain processing was once central to rural English life and remains a symbol of the agricultural past. Walking around it shows the engineering methods that served farming communities for generations.
The mill sits in a rural village setting and is easily accessible from nearby roads. Visitors should note that it is a protected heritage site, so all on-site regulations should be respected.
The actor Michael Redgrave acquired the mill in 1937, connecting the world of film to this rural landmark. A new cap was constructed in the 1970s to ensure the historic structure would endure.
