Ynyslas Sand Dunes, Coastal dunes in Ceredigion, Wales
Ynyslas Sand Dunes is a coastal dune system along the southern edge of Dyfi Estuary with extensive sand formations, grasslands, and wetland areas. The site includes visible ancient tree stumps and specialized habitats that support a variety of bird and plant species.
The site was once a forested area whose tree stumps are now between 4,500 and 6,000 years old and visible at low tide. These remains date from the period after the Ice Age before flooding changed the vegetation.
The submerged forest connects to the Welsh legend of Cantre'r Gwaelod, a mythological sunken kingdom said to have disappeared beneath these waters. Visitors can trace this ancient story through what becomes visible at low tide.
The site is managed through conservation programs including winter grazing by Welsh Mountain Sheep to control vegetation growth. Visitors should be aware of changing tide conditions and wear suitable footwear for sandy and wet areas.
The site contains protective enclosures for ringed plovers, whose populations have increased in recent years through these conservation efforts. These birds are difficult to spot, but their presence makes this a significant breeding ground along the Welsh coast.
