Lesmahagow Old Parish Church, Category B listed church in Lesmahagow, Scotland.
Lesmahagow Old Parish Church is a rectangular church building standing in Church Square in South Lanarkshire, featuring an apse section added in the 1800s. The structure displays traditional church proportions with its straightforward design and characteristic layout.
The site began as a Culdee settlement with Celtic monks before King David I granted the church to Tironensian monks in the 12th century. This transfer shaped the religious character of the place for centuries to come.
The East Window displays a reproduction of Rubens' Descent from the Cross, a work from the 17th century that catches visitors' eyes upon entering. This artwork shapes how the interior feels when you step inside.
The building functions as an active place of worship with regular services shared with the neighboring Coalburn Parish Church. Plan your visit outside of service times if you wish to explore the interior freely.
A devastating fire in 1981 destroyed much of the building and prompted extensive restoration work. The apse and entire interior were subsequently rebuilt and completely redecorated.
