King John's Palace, Medieval merchant house in Southampton, England.
The Norman stone building features two floors with large windows on the upper level and small protective openings on the ground floor.
Built in the 1180s as a merchant residence, the structure became part of Southampton's defensive wall following a French raid in 1338.
The ground floor stored wine casks from France while the first floor contained living quarters with a stone fireplace and extensive windows.
The structure stands near Blue Anchor Lane, formerly known as Wytegod's Lane, and visitors can examine the early examples of defensive gun ports.
Three original archways on the west wall connected directly to the medieval quays where ships unloaded cargo from continental Europe.
