Marischal Museum, Anthropology museum in Aberdeen, Scotland.
Marischal Museum is an anthropology museum in Aberdeen, Scotland, housed within the neo-gothic granite building of Marischal College, and it held Egyptian antiquities, Classical artifacts, and objects from Scottish prehistory. Since its exhibition space closed in 2008, the collections have been moved and can now be seen at King's Museum in the Old Aberdeen Town House.
The museum was founded in 1786 and remained open for over two centuries before closing in 2008 due to renovation works at Marischal College. It is one of the oldest university museums in Scotland.
The collection holds ethnographic objects from non-Western cultures alongside Scottish coins recognized as nationally important by the Scottish Government. Visitors who see these pieces at King's Museum today can observe directly how different societies lived and how local heritage has been shaped over time.
The original exhibition space inside Marischal College is not open to visitors, as the building is still undergoing renovation work. The collections can be seen at King's Museum in Old Aberdeen, which is open to the public.
The Marischal College building now serves as a conservation laboratory and research center for the University of Aberdeen rather than a public gallery. This behind-the-scenes role means that the objects held there are actively studied and cared for, supporting the work done at King's Museum.
