Finnart, Medieval barony in Inverclyde, Scotland.
Finnart is a medieval barony west of Greenock that extends from the West Burn to the River Clyde and into the glen toward Inverkip. The area was transformed into urban residential neighborhoods, with the West Burn now flowing through an underground culvert beneath Westburn Street.
In 1455 the barony was divided between the Hamiltons and the Stewarts after the Earl of Douglas forfeited it to the crown. This division shaped the landownership and political structure of the area for generations to come.
The area was once part of a medieval estate and is now divided into residential neighborhoods. The name Finnart still appears in some street names and local references within the modern districts of Greenock West.
The site lies west of Greenock and is easily navigated on foot through modern residential streets today. Most visitors access the area from Greenock on foot or by local public transport.
Sir James Hamilton, known as the Bastard of Arran, inherited the barony but lost both it and his life through beheading. His story reflects the dangerous political struggles of 15th century Scotland.
