Gibberd Garden, Landscape garden in Harlow, England
Gibberd Garden is a landscape garden in Harlow featuring winding paths, water features, and around eighty sculptures distributed across carefully designed natural spaces. The site is organized through tree-lined passages that guide visitors to different areas.
The garden was developed by Sir Frederick Gibberd, the architect and planner of Harlow New Town, between 1956 and 1984. Gibberd used his understanding of urban design to create a private garden that continuously evolved.
The garden displays sculptures by different artists set within natural surroundings that visitors encounter as they walk. These works integrate with the landscape rather than standing apart as gallery pieces.
The garden can be visited during certain days from April through September, and wearing sturdy shoes is helpful as the paths can become damp. There are multiple entry points, and a leisurely walk through takes about two to three hours.
The paths are intentionally set below grass level, allowing natural vegetation to grow over them and create an unexpected connection with the surrounding landscape. This design creates a quiet, enclosed feeling while remaining open to visitors.
