Mount Ephraim Gardens, Grade II listed gardens in Hernhill, England
Mount Ephraim Gardens is a 10-acre English garden featuring structured landscapes, wildflower meadows, and a lake fed by natural springs. The property combines herbaceous borders, rock gardens, and water features connected by designated pathways throughout the grounds.
The gardens were established in the early 1900s on an estate owned by the same family since 1695. A major restoration in the 1950s shaped the current appearance and preserved the historical layout for future generations.
The gardens display traditional English landscaping with yew topiary shaped as birds, animals, and First World War memorials that visitors encounter throughout the grounds. These handcrafted plant forms tell stories and create distinctive focal points reflecting the estate's long connection to the local community.
The gardens are open to visitors from April through September with designated pathways guiding you through different sections. Allow several hours to explore the various areas at a leisurely pace and take in the different plantings and water features.
The grounds include a Miz-maze created in 2004 that blends elements of both a traditional labyrinth and a maze using ornamental grasses. This unusual structure offers visitors a puzzle to navigate that stands apart from the rest of the garden.
