Heanton Satchville, Petrockstowe, English country house in Petrockstowe, North Devon.
Heanton Satchville is an English country house estate near Petrockstowe in North Devon, where the original mansion combined local moorstone with structures built over several centuries. Today the property shows its layered history through remaining structures including a farmhouse and agricultural buildings on what was once a grand residence.
The manor appeared in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Hantone and originally belonged to Baldwin the Sheriff, a feudal baron of Okehampton. The Rolle family later acquired the property and maintained influence there for generations before the mansion was destroyed by fire in 1795.
The estate represented the social and political power of several noble families, including the Rolles who acquired influence through their purchase of Callington borough in 1601.
The site contains remains spread across an estate that requires careful exploration, as some areas may be unstable or overgrown. Visitors should check access conditions beforehand and wear appropriate outdoor clothing for the moorland environment.
Margaret Rolle, who inherited the title Baroness Clinton, connected the estate to Robert Walpole's family through her marriage to the 2nd Earl of Orford.
