Highnam Court, Grade I listed country house in Highnam, England.
Highnam Court is a stone country house featuring classical details including paneled shutters on windows and marble fireplace installations throughout its rooms. The grounds include several garden areas ranging from formal flower gardens to terraced sections with Mediterranean-style features.
The house was built in 1658 following damage to the area from warfare and served as a fresh start for its original owner. In the 19th century, a renowned architect carried out extensive redesigns that gave the building much of its present-day appearance.
The estate takes its name from the village of Highnam and reflects the vision of a collector who shaped the gardens with rare plants and artistic designs. Visitors can still see how this historical passion for garden design remains alive in the different areas of the grounds today.
Access to the grounds is limited to certain days of the year, so it is wise to check opening times in advance. Good walking shoes are recommended as the gardens have multiple levels and paths crossing different terrain.
A modern orangery building from the early 21st century stands alongside centuries-old garden structures, blending contemporary design with classical garden principles. This mixing shows how the estate has continued to evolve while keeping its original character.
