Holy Cross Church, Woodchurch

Holy Cross Church is a stone building with a nave flanked by side aisles, a chancel, and a tower reinforced with strong diagonal buttresses added in 1675. The layout follows traditional English church design, with a clear division between the worship space and the areas for prayer.

The church structure began in the 1100s, but the circular graveyard pattern around it points to earlier settlement and worship on this site during Saxon or Roman times. The location held spiritual importance long before the present building was constructed.

Wooden epitaph panels from the 1600s and pieces of medieval stained glass inside show how worship and remembrance have shaped the space over centuries. Walking through, you can see how different generations left their mark on this place of faith.

The building can be visited by arrangement, so it is wise to contact the church before going to ensure access. Different times of year may affect whether you can walk around the grounds comfortably.

An archaeological dig on the church grounds uncovered part of an Anglo-Saxon wheel cross from the early Christian period. This find shows the site was used for burials long before the medieval church was built.
