Keston Roman villa, Roman villa ruins in Keston, England.
Keston Roman Villa is an archaeological site containing multiple stone structures, including a circular mausoleum and residential foundations with preserved mosaic floor sections. The remains show how the complex was arranged and used by Roman residents over several centuries.
The villa complex began around 160 AD and developed over several centuries as wooden buildings were gradually replaced by substantial stone structures. It remained occupied until roughly 400 AD, reflecting changing construction practices during that period.
Excavated fragments of painted plaster and decorated sarcophagi reveal how Roman craftspeople worked and decorated their homes. These finds show what daily artistic expression looked like among the inhabitants of this residential compound.
The site is accessible from Keston Common car park and occasionally offers guided tours where specialists explain the archaeological discoveries. It helps to check beforehand if tours are running and to wear weather-appropriate clothing for outdoor exploration.
The mausoleum was originally covered in bright red plaster, which would have made it stand out as a notable structure in the Roman countryside. This colored coating made it visible from considerable distances and set it apart from the surrounding buildings.
