Udny Castle, Tower house in Udny Green, Scotland
Udny Castle is a five-story rectangular tower house located near Udny Green in Aberdeenshire, featuring ornamental turrets and thick stone walls. The building stands on elevated ground that rises above the surrounding rural landscape and countryside.
The Udny family built the castle in the 15th century as a fortified residence for their lands. After a fire destroyed their other seat at Knockhall Castle in 1734, the family returned to make this tower their primary home.
The first-floor hall contains window seats and displays a Victorian-era ceiling designed in the Jacobean style, spanning the entire width of the structure.
The tower house sits in a rural setting between the settlements of Udny Green and Pitmedden in Aberdeenshire. The nearest major city is Aberdeen, from which visitors can drive to reach the site.
The construction of the tower took place across three generations of laird owners, placing severe financial strain on each one. This extended building process shows how demanding it was for Scottish landholders to raise such fortified structures.
