Skerries Lighthouse, Maritime navigation tower on Ynys Y Moelrhoniaid islands, Wales.
Skerries Lighthouse is a limestone tower standing on the largest of the Ynys Y Moelrhoniaid islands off the Welsh coast. The beacon emits regular light signals to guide ships safely through these treacherous waters.
The lighthouse was founded in 1717 after the builder's son died near these rocks. It marked the beginning of maritime safety measures in this sea area.
The structure represents the transition from private to public lighthouse management in Britain, being the last privately owned beacon acquired by Trinity House.
The automated system allows the lighthouse to operate continuously without permanent staff on site. Visiting is possible but requires preparation for the exposed location on the sea.
The site contains several residential buildings from the same period with crenellated roofs and cobbled courtyards. An old stone well-head shows the infrastructure that once supported the settlement.
