Cheesefoot Head, Natural amphitheater and protected scientific site near Winchester, England
Cheesefoot Head is a natural chalk grassland amphitheater located near Winchester that spans about 13 hectares. The site contains three prehistoric burial mounds and hosts a diverse range of plants including dwarf thistles and fragrant orchids adapted to the chalky soil.
This location served as a gathering point where General Eisenhower addressed American forces before the Normandy landings in 1944. The site played a small but notable role in preparations for one of World War II's most significant operations.
The natural bowl has served as a gathering place for large music festivals since the late 1990s, drawing people from across the region to experience open-air performances. This role reflects how the landscape itself shapes how communities come together for celebration.
The site is accessible via the A272 road with connections to the South Downs Way trail system, and designated parking areas are available nearby. The open grassland can be explored on foot with good visibility across the natural amphitheater from multiple viewing points.
An adjacent motocross racing facility uses the valley for international competitions, including World Championship rounds and the Motocross of Nations event. The coexistence of a protected grassland site with a professional motorsports venue is an unusual pairing in this landscape.
