Church of St John the Baptist, Keynsham, Medieval parish church in Keynsham, England.
The Church of St John the Baptist is a medieval parish church featuring a spacious nave divided into eight bays with aisles on both sides and a three-stage west tower strengthened by buttresses. The building contains a pulpit and screen from the 17th century along with later additions that reflect centuries of use and care.
The structure was built in 1270 and replaced an earlier cathedral church that had stood near Keynsham Abbey since the 9th century. Over the following centuries the building underwent modifications and additions while maintaining its core medieval form.
The church has served as the spiritual heart of Keynsham for centuries and remains a gathering place for the community. Its interior reflects the devotion of past generations through donated furnishings and maintained traditions of worship.
The church is open to visitors during service times and other designated hours throughout the week. It is worth checking ahead of your visit to understand when you can freely explore the interior without interrupting worship.
The bells range from the 16th century to the 18th century and received electronic tuning in 1987 to improve their sound. This blend of old instruments and modern adjustment allows the bells to ring with their full character today.
