Church of St Mary, Lowe House, Roman Catholic church in St Helens, England
The Church of St Mary at Lowe House is a religious building that combines Romanesque and Gothic design elements, topped by a castellated octagonal tower with a copper cross. Inside, the church holds a large collection of bells that work together as a musical instrument.
Construction of the building started in 1924 on land given by Winefred Eccleston, replacing a much older chapel from 1793. This transition marked the growth of the parish and its need for a larger structure.
The church serves as a community gathering place for religious celebrations and parish events throughout the year. People come here to mark important moments in their lives, from weddings to christenings.
The church is located in the town center of St Helens with nearby parking available for visitors. Contact the parish office if you wish to arrange a visit or learn more about accessing the building.
Local residents affectionately call this building 'The Poor Man's Cathedral' because the entire construction was funded through community donations during a period of financial hardship. This history of collective support remains part of what makes the place meaningful to people today.
