Gleneagles Hotel, Modern architecture hotel in Torquay, England
The Gleneagles Hotel was a three-story modern structure in Torquay offering 41 rooms, each with a private bathroom and individual names such as Coral or Mimosa. The building featured an open-plan lounge, bar area, and a heated outdoor swimming pool for guests.
The building opened in 1963 as apartments before becoming a four-star hotel under Donald and Beatrice Sinclair's ownership. This transformation lasted until 1973 when ownership changed.
The hotel served as inspiration for the television series Fawlty Towers after John Cleese stayed there with the Monty Python team in 1970. This connection to the beloved comedy continues to draw attention from fans of the show.
The location was equipped with modern facilities for its time, providing guests with comfortable amenities. Visitors should know the hotel closed in 2015 and is no longer accessible to tour.
The hotel was demolished in 2015 and replaced by retirement apartments named Sachs Lodge, honoring Andrew Sachs who played a character in Fawlty Towers. This naming choice keeps the connection to the show alive in a new form.
