Chetwynd Barracks, Military barracks in Chilwell, Nottinghamshire, England.
Chetwynd Barracks is an active military installation in Chilwell, Nottinghamshire, England, made up of many buildings used for army training, administration, and support. It serves as the headquarters of the 7th Light Mechanised Brigade Combat Team and also houses the East Reserves Training and Mobilisation Centre.
The site was built in 1919 on land that had previously housed a munitions factory during the First World War. It was renamed in 1995 after Viscount Chetwynd to mark the military history tied to this location.
A Grade II-listed War Memorial on the grounds serves as a gathering point for local remembrance events, drawing people from the surrounding community. These ceremonies give the site a role that goes beyond its purely military function.
The barracks sit in a built-up part of Chilwell and are straightforward to reach by public transport or by car. Since it is an active military base, public access is limited and visitors should arrange entry ahead of time.
There are plans to convert the site into a housing area with around 1500 homes, while keeping some of the older military buildings standing. This would make it one of the few examples in England of an active barracks turned directly into a residential neighborhood.
