The site was established during World War I as a storage depot for explosives brought from Woolwich Arsenal. Over the following decades, it grew into a permanent military base and took on its current role in bomb disposal training and operations.
The barracks sit on the edge of Didcot, and the military presence has been part of the town's identity for generations. The site is associated with the Royal Logistic Corps, whose work focuses on bomb disposal and search operations.
The site is an active military base and is not open to the public. The surrounding streets in Didcot can be walked freely, but the base itself can only be seen from the perimeter.
The original depot was once crossed by an internal railway network used to move explosives and supplies around the storage areas. This made the site one of the most important distribution points for military material in southern England during World War I.
