Happisburgh footprints, Prehistoric trace fossil site in Happisburgh, Norfolk, England.
The collection of fossilized footprints extends across 40 square meters of sediment, containing 152 individual impressions from multiple individuals of varying ages.
The footprints, dated to 800,000 years ago, were discovered in 2013 when coastal erosion exposed ancient sediments on Happisburgh beach.
These footprints represent the earliest evidence of human presence in northern Europe, predating all other known settlements in the British Isles.
The site requires careful timing to visit as the footprints are only visible during specific low tide conditions along the Norfolk coast.
The sediment analysis reveals that when these prints were made, Britain was connected to continental Europe through a land bridge where the English Channel now flows.
