Studio Voltaire, British charitable organization
Studio Voltaire is an art gallery and nonprofit organization in Clapham, South London, dedicated to supporting artists. The building, a former Methodist Chapel from the 19th century, provides exhibition space, over forty artist studios, and residency programs for artists working locally and internationally.
The organization was founded and initially started on Voltaire Road before moving to the former Methodist Chapel building in 1999, where it remains today. A major renovation in 2021 expanded the artist studios and added new facilities including the House of Voltaire shop.
The name comes from the original location on Voltaire Road where the organization started. Visitors experience it as a space where contemporary art conversations blend with local community stories and social themes.
The space is open Wednesday to Sunday from 11 in the morning to 6 in the evening and admission is free, so visitors can return as often as they wish. The building is in Clapham and easily reached by public transport, with accessible rooms designed for all visitors.
The building was originally a 19th-century Methodist Chapel and retained its distinctive architecture, setting it apart from modern galleries and inspiring artists to create installations that work specifically with this space. Since 2011, a program called Not Our Class has involved local people in art projects exploring community history and social themes.
