Le Marchant Barracks, Military barracks in Devizes, England.
Le Marchant Barracks is a former military site northeast of Devizes town center with Gothic Revival architecture. The complex features a prominent keep and gatehouse, with the converted keep now containing residential units alongside a section for territorial army activities.
The barracks was built in 1878 during the Cardwell Reforms and served as a depot for the 62nd and 99th Regiments. These regiments later merged to form the Wiltshire Regiment.
The Grade II listed structures show Victorian military architecture through their distinctive design. Visitors can see how these buildings reflect the importance of military installations in British history.
The site is easily accessible with its own parking and buildings are clearly visible from outside. Note that some areas have been privatized and access to certain parts may be limited.
In December 1944, around 7,500 German prisoners of war held at the site planned an escape attempt known as the Devizes Plot. This incident revealed the challenges of managing large prisoner camps during wartime.
