New End Theatre, Theatre in Hampstead, England.
New End Theatre is a former small theatre on New End street in the Hampstead area of north London, within the London Borough of Camden. The building could seat around 80 people and was connected to a secondary space by an underground passage running beneath the street.
The theatre opened in 1974 after an entrepreneur converted what had been a mortuary into a performance space. It remained active for several decades before closing as a theatre in the early 2000s and being converted to another use.
New End Theatre was known for giving new writers and experimental works a stage that larger venues would not have offered. This openness drew a loyal local audience from Hampstead and the wider north London area.
The building is no longer used as a theatre and is not open to the public inside. The exterior can be seen from New End street, which is a short walk from the center of Hampstead and well served by public transport.
The production 'A Day in Hollywood / A Night in the Ukraine' started here before transferring to the West End, which is rarely the path a show takes from a venue of this size. The underground passage connecting parts of the building was left over from the site's earlier life as a mortuary.
