Kempston Barracks, Military depot in Kempston, United Kingdom
Kempston Barracks is a military depot in Kempston built with red brick, stone trim, and a slate roof featuring four distinctive towers along its north face. The complex was designed to store thousands of weapons and supplies while providing housing and support facilities for military personnel and their families.
The barracks were completed in 1876 as the headquarters for the 16th Regiment of Foot, then transferred to the Bedfordshire Regiment in 1881 as a regional supply depot. During World War I, the facility processed over 40,000 military recruits, becoming a major training and administrative center during the conflict.
During World War I, the barracks processed over 40,000 military recruits, influencing the development and demographics of Kempston's New Town neighborhood.
The original complex spread across 23 acres with separate housing units for soldiers, married families, officers, and a hospital ward on the grounds. Parts of the site are now privately held, so access may be limited depending on which sections you wish to see.
The Keep section of the former barracks was purchased by Bedford Freemasons in 1981 and now serves as their meeting place. This transformation of a military structure into a fraternal lodge headquarters represents an interesting piece of the site's recent evolution.
