Inchindown oil tanks, Underground oil depot in Invergordon, Scotland
Inchindown is an underground oil storage facility in Rosskeen, near Invergordon in the Scottish Highlands. The depot contains six massive concrete tanks built inside a hillside to protect fuel supplies during wartime operations.
The tanks were built between 1938 and 1941 by the Royal Navy to store fuel safely during World War II. Their underground location provided protection against bombing and other military threats of the wartime period.
The facility received Category A listed building status in 2014, marking its importance in Scottish industrial and military heritage.
Visits to these underground tanks require advance booking through specialized tour operators who follow strict safety rules. Access depends on the facility's operational needs and may be limited to certain times or group sizes.
The tanks hold a record for creating one of the longest echoes inside any human-made structure, with sound reverberating for about two minutes. This acoustic phenomenon makes the space feel almost alive when sounds are produced inside.
