Pengersick Castle, Grade I listed fortified manor house in Breage, England.
Pengersick Castle is a fortified manor house in Breage with a medieval tower featuring defensive details such as narrow openings and ports. The structure shows how such residences combined domestic comfort with military protection during its period.
William Worth began construction in 1510 and spent the next 20 years strengthening and expanding the building using wealth from a Portuguese shipwreck. This unexpected financial windfall allowed significant improvements that transformed it into a prosperous residence.
The grounds hosted traditional Cornish wrestling matches over the centuries, bringing the community together through this regional sport. These events kept local customs alive and made the place a center of community life.
Visits are by appointment only through the Pengersick Historic & Education Trust, which manages the building and organizes all tours. You should book in advance to arrange a convenient time for your visit.
One interior room contains original wainscot panels painted with historical scenes and accompanied by verses and proverbs from earlier centuries. These decorative panels reveal the values and wisdom that the residents considered worth preserving on their walls.
