Bliss Tweed Mill

Bliss Tweed Mill is a five-story limestone building in Chipping Norton designed to look more like a country house than a factory, with square towers topped by decorative urns. The structure demonstrates how industrial buildings could blend seamlessly into the rural landscape through careful architectural planning.

The building was constructed in 1872 as a facility for producing fine wool cloth, becoming a major employer in the area for over a century. The mill gained recognition for its quality output during the height of British textile production.

The workers who labored here became known locally for standing up to defend their right to organize, a moment that shaped community memory for generations. This event marked the place as one where ordinary people fought for fairness in their working lives.

The building has been converted into residential apartments and is not open to visitors inside, but the impressive exterior is easily viewed from the surrounding streets. You can walk around the property to appreciate the architecture and its position within the village.

The most distinctive feature is its circular tower with a domed roof housing the chimney, designed to resemble a Tuscan column that rises prominently above the village. This tower was so visible from a distance that it served as a landmark for the entire area.
