The Grange Barn, 13th-century monastic barn in Coggeshall, England
The Grange Barn is a large timber-framed structure with a central nave and two side aisles, built following medieval construction methods. The building shows typical features of a monastic barn with open spaces designed for grain storage and handling of agricultural materials.
Cistercian monks built the structure to supply the nearby Coggeshall Abbey. During the 14th century it underwent significant changes, and later it fell into disrepair before eventually being restored.
The name reflects its original function as a storage facility for monks. Walking through the space, you can observe how the open structure and layout were designed to accommodate farm produce and tools from the surrounding lands.
The barn is accessible by car or bus and offers parking areas along with electric vehicle charging points. Visitors should allow time to explore the large open spaces, preferably in good daylight, to see the wooden framework fully.
The building preserves two gabled wagon doorways from the 18th century, specially designed for loading and unloading carts. These door structures demonstrate how farmers adapted their buildings over time to meet changing needs.
