Ashcombe House is an L-shaped building with two storeys constructed from grey headers and red brick dressings, featuring a modillion cornice. Three dormers with segmental heads and intact glazing bars punctuate the roofline.
The building began as a farmhouse in the 18th century and later became a residential property. From 1963 to 1981, it served as the Vice-Chancellor's residence for the University of Sussex.
The architectural features of Ashcombe House represent the Georgian country house design principles, incorporating local building materials and traditional craftsmanship.
The house sits near Brighton Road and can be approached via a stone porch with four steps leading to its entrance. The setting provides clear views from the nearby roadway.
