Julian's Bower, Medieval turf maze in Alkborough, England
Julian's Bower is a maze cut into grass on a hillside near Alkborough with concentric rings that form a walking path from outside to center. The turf pattern covers roughly 13 meters across and allows visitors to see over the landscape toward where three rivers meet below.
The maze was first recorded in 1697 when historian Abraham de la Pryme noted it and wondered if it might have Roman roots. Over centuries the local community maintained it, and it has survived as a scheduled monument protected under heritage law.
The maze holds meaning in local custom as a place tied to old fertility beliefs and courtship traditions passed down through generations. People in the village still recognize it as part of their heritage and speak of its role in their community's past.
Wear suitable footwear for walking on grass since the path can become slippery after rain or wet weather. The site has no facilities or shelter, so bring weather protection and allow plenty of time to explore the entire maze path at a comfortable pace.
The maze pattern has been woven into local craftsmanship over time and appears on gravestones, church stonework, and boundary markers scattered throughout the village. These repeated appearances show how deeply the design became part of local identity.
