The stone-built church stands at an elevation of 130 meters, featuring traditional Welsh architectural elements and a prominent position in the townscape of Aberdare.
The original structure dates back to 1189, with Methodist leader John Wesley delivering two notable sermons at this location in 1749.
The building maintains its Welsh identity through bilingual services and signage, known locally as Eglwys Sant Ioan Fedyddiwr.
Regular worship services take place throughout the week, with additional ceremonies for weddings, baptisms, and community gatherings in the church grounds.
The church underwent substantial restoration in the nineteenth century due to flooding issues, with reports of coffins floating in the saturated burial ground.
