Usk Bridge, Stone road bridge in Brecon, Wales.
Usk Bridge is a stone road bridge in Brecon featuring seven segmental arches with stone parapets. It spans the River Usk between Bridge Street and Watergate, with metal-framed footpaths added on both sides during the twentieth century.
The original structure was built in 1563 after the previous structure was destroyed by flooding. Under the supervision of Thomas Edwards, the bridge underwent major widening work in 1794.
The bridge connects different parts of town and forms part of a series of historic buildings in Brecon. It plays an important role in daily city life and shapes how people move through this area.
Pedestrians can safely use the metal-framed footpaths on both sides of the bridge, which were added during the twentieth century. The bridge connects two main streets and is easy to access from the town center.
The bridge piers feature tapered cutwaters that reduce water pressure during high flow conditions. This structural detail helps the bridge withstand force from the river during flooding.
