St Jerome's Church, Medieval church in Llangwm Uchaf, Wales
St Jerome's Church is a medieval church in Llangwm featuring purple rubble stone walls with a stone-tiled roof over the nave. The chancel is covered with smaller slate tiles, and a large tower dominates the structure's profile.
The church was built in 1128 and served as a functioning place of worship throughout the centuries. Between 1863 and 1869, architect John Pollard Seddon directed extensive restoration work to arrest the building's decline.
Three carved green man sculptures adorn the chancel arch, visible to visitors when entering the interior. These figures reflect medieval stone carving traditions and shape the character of the sacred space.
The church sits at the end of a lane roughly 500 meters (1640 feet) east of Llangwm Isaf, so wear comfortable shoes and allow time for walking. Access is managed by the Friends of Friendless Churches, so check opening times before visiting.
The medieval rood screen dating to 1500 displays some of Britain's finest decorative craftsmanship with intricate carved details. This remarkable piece underwent restoration during the Victorian period and remains a testament to masterful medieval artistry.
