The seven-bay Georgian building features a central section with Doric columns and an entablature displaying the 1779 completion date at Joymount.
The structure stands on the former site of a Franciscan friary from 1248, later replaced by Lord Chichester's manor house before becoming a courthouse in 1768.
The courthouse held significant legal proceedings, including the 1797 trial of William Orr, which became a symbol of judicial proceedings in County Antrim.
The building serves multiple functions with different rooms for council meetings, visitor information services, and public gatherings in Carrickfergus town center.
The former prison area, accessed through the Hanging Gate, witnessed the last execution in 1844 before transforming into a militia barracks.
