Rio Cinema, Art Deco movie theater in Dalston, England
Rio Cinema is an Art Deco movie theater in Dalston with two screening rooms housed within a Grade II listed building. The interior features blue-grey and warm brown decorative elements that reflect the original architectural style.
The building opened in 1909 as Kingsland Palace with a small seating capacity and later became Kingsland Empire in 1915. It took the name Rio Cinema in 1976 following these earlier transformations.
The cinema screens independent films and international productions that draw local audiences seeking alternatives to mainstream cinema. The programming reflects the diverse community of the neighborhood.
The venue is located on Kingsland High Street with good bus access from multiple routes nearby. Accessible facilities including gender-neutral restrooms and drinking fountains are available for visitors.
During World War II the basement functioned as an air raid shelter for the neighborhood. When converted into a second screening room in 2017 it retained this protective underground purpose in a new form.
