Rock on Top of Another Rock

Rock on Top of Another Rock is a large-scale sculpture made from two substantial glacial boulders stacked vertically with one resting on top of the other. The lower stone sits firmly on the ground while the upper boulder appears impossibly balanced above it.

The sculpture was completed in 2014 by Swiss artists Peter Fischli and David Weiss. It joined an extensive collection of public artworks that Westminster has been developing.

The work invites people to reconsider how ordinary natural objects can become art through deliberate placement. Visitors often pause to wonder how something so heavy manages to stay balanced.

The sculpture stands in a public space and is freely accessible throughout the year at any time. Visitors can approach it from different angles and view it in all kinds of weather.

The two boulders originate from alpine regions and were transported specifically to create this unexpected arrangement in central London. This displacement of natural stones creates an interesting contrast between their remote origins and the busy urban setting.
