Sharpham, Grade II* listed park and garden in Ashprington, GB.
Sharpham is a Grade II* listed estate spanning approximately 222 hectares with a Georgian mansion, formal gardens, and parkland overlooking the River Dart in South Devon. The grounds also include a working vineyard and various buildings that support contemporary retreat and educational activities.
The mansion began construction in 1770 under Captain Philemon Pownoll based on designs by architect Sir Robert Taylor and has remained the centerpiece of the estate. The property was later adapted for contemporary educational and retreat purposes while maintaining its original structures.
The estate now operates as a retreat center where visitors participate in mindfulness programs and nature-based activities throughout the year. People come here to spend time in the gardens and grounds as part of their learning and personal practice.
The grounds are accessible on foot with established pathways through gardens and parkland offering various exploration options. Prior planning is advisable since the estate regularly hosts programs and activities that may affect general access to certain areas.
The mansion contains one of England's most notable 18th-century staircase designs, a fact documented by prominent architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner. This interior feature exemplifies the quality and ambition of the original builder's vision.
