Kett's Oak, Historical oak tree in Wymondham, England.
Kett's Oak is an ancient English oak tree standing along the B1172 road between Wymondham and Hethersett in Norfolk. Its trunk is held up by wooden frames and metal bands, put in place to stop the aging tree from collapsing under its own weight.
In 1549, Robert Kett and his followers gathered beneath this tree before marching to Norwich to lead a rebellion against the enclosure of common lands in Norfolk. That event gave the oak a place in English history that it has kept ever since.
The oak carries a strong presence in local memory as a gathering place tied to resistance against unfair land practices. Visitors standing beneath its supported branches can still sense the weight of what happened here centuries ago.
The tree stands right along the B1172 road, making it easy to spot when passing by car or on foot. A small information sign nearby gives context about its story, which helps first-time visitors make sense of the site.
In 2020, the tree received a biochar treatment applied to the soil around its roots to help it survive. This method is rarely used on individual old trees and shows how much effort goes into keeping it standing.
