The Araki, Japanese restaurant in New Burlington Street, London
The Araki is a Japanese restaurant on New Burlington Street featuring a 200-year-old cypress wood counter with seating for nine guests who observe food preparation directly. An additional private room accommodates groups who prefer to dine away from the counter.
Master chef Mitsuhiro Araki relocated his three-star restaurant from Tokyo to London in 2014, following guidance from renowned chef Joël Robuchon. This move marked the restaurant's expansion into the European market.
The chef prepares sushi following Edomae traditions, a classical Tokyo style that combines handcrafted techniques with locally sourced British ingredients. Diners experience this approach firsthand as each course is prepared directly in front of them at the counter.
The restaurant offers only a fixed menu and requires advance reservation due to its very small size. Doors close 30 minutes after the scheduled booking time to prepare for the next seating.
The cypress wood counter was originally a gift from Japanese musician Ryuichi Sakamoto to the restaurant. Installation was carried out by Takenaka Corporation, a construction company with over 500 years of tradition.
