The Roman Catholic Church of St Mary Star of the Sea features pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and flying buttresses characteristic of Gothic Revival design.
Architect Basil Champneys designed the church in 1882, with construction costs reaching £15,000, including a substantial donation of £5,300 from poet Coventry Patmore.
The church maintains three Sunday masses, including a dedicated Polish mass on the first Sunday of each month at 6:00 PM.
The church building contains a crypt that initially served as St Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Primary School until its relocation to Magdalen Lane in 1955.
The Pallottine religious order administers the church, which received Grade II listed status from English Heritage on September 14, 1976.
