Hornsea Wind Farms, Offshore wind farm cluster in North Sea, United Kingdom
Hornsea Wind Farms are offshore installations spread across the North Sea, powered by numerous turbines that capture wind energy. These facilities feed renewable electricity into the British grid system.
The first installation started operating in 2019, breaking new ground as the first offshore wind farm to exceed 1 GW of capacity. A second phase came online three years later, significantly expanding the project's total output.
The Grimsby Hub serves as the operational heart, employing technicians and support staff who maintain these installations. Local communities now look to this energy source as central to the region's economic future.
These installations sit well offshore and cannot be easily visited since they are located in international waters. You can learn about them through visitor centers in Grimsby or by viewing online resources dedicated to the technology.
Each turbine spins slowly but delivers enough electricity from a single rotation to power a home for an entire day. The massive rotor blades are proportionally shorter than the tower itself, highlighting the scale of these machines.
